In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.
Attire
Medieval clothes provided information about the status of the person wearing them. The clothing and fashion during the times of the Middle Ages was dominated and highly influenced by the Kings and Queens of the era. Only the wealthy could dress in fashionable clothes.
Castle
The Medieval period of history was extremely violent. The quest for wealth and power was driven by the violent society of the European countries. Massive stone castles were built to act as power bases. Lands were subject to invasion leading to wars, battles and siege situations.
Weapons
The weapons used the times included different types of Swords. Medieval Swords and armor was predominantly used and worn by a Knight. The weapons, armor and horse of the Knight were extremely expensive which prohibited most people from owning swords or armor.
Music
Medieval music consisted of the religious or secular music of the church, however some pagan rituals relating to music and dancing, such as Maypole dancing, continued throughout the times. The ideals of courtly love were introduced further influencing the content and styles of Medieval music.
Banquet
Most medieval banquets had 3 or 4 courses with an interlude of entertainment or music in between each course. The greatest of banquets such as would be fit for a king or member of a royal family would often have up to 7 courses.
Medieval Menu
